A small white building sits on Mission Road amidst houses and trees. Only a cross that adorns the roof and a sign that reads "Top of The Bottom Ministry - come to Jesus and be saved" let the observer know it's a church.
It has no large sanctuary or family life center like many of today's churches. What The Top of The Bottom Ministry does have, however, is a heart for the community.
"Here you have the haves and the have-nots on the same block," said the Rev. Willie Williams, church pastor. The area near W Street and Fairfield Drive is commonly called "The Bottom."
Williams became a Christian while he was in jail. When he was released, he returned to his community with a mission to use his faith to help improve it.
"It was crying out," he said. "I knew how the city was starting to get in ruins, how the kids were taking over the streets and the elder people were locked in their homes." This was just something that I wanted to go out and correct"
Williams now spends his days trying to help in this community where he grew up. The ministry holds Sunday church services and much more. During the week, the feed hot meals and deliver boxes of produce and foods to families who need them. Williams spends a great deal of his time working with the children of the area helping with everything from after=school tutoring to choir practice, "trying to save this generation," he said.
"My heart is really here. I mean, I see so much hurt, so much neglect, but only God can give me the strength to go through."
